Goaltending: Unwanted in Tampa Bay, Smith tied a Coyotes’ club record with eight shutouts last season and set a new team standard with his save percentage. Part of an athletic family, his wife Brigitte is a Canadian World Cup skier.

Player to watch: C Andy Miele. There’s not much room for newcomers on the Phoenix roster, but Miele should make a good case for himself. He’s third in scoring with Portland (AHL), showing 11-15-26 numbers, and leads the club with three game winners. Last season, Miele led Portland in scoring with 16-38-54 totals in 69 games.

Icing: Last season’s divisional title was the first in franchise history, dating back to 1979-80 when they were the original Winnipeg Jets . . . Conference final appearance was also a franchise first . . . Tippett has posted at least 40 wins in eight of his nine NHL seasons.

Rask credits a team effort on defense
Without the need for an overtime period, the Bruins won Game 3 over the Blackhawks, 2-0. Bruins coach Claude Julien credits Tuukka Rask for his preparation and extreme focus, while Rask appreciates the guys in front of him covering their ice and blocking shots.
