NBC Sports: The Dan Schwartzman Show

Season preview: Ducks

Stanley Cups: 1

2011-'12 record: 34-36-5-7, 80 points (5th in Pacific, 13th in West)

2011-'12 playoffs: Did not qualify

Coach: Bruce Boudreau (228-111-48, 6th NHL year, 2nd team)

Top returning scorer: RW Teemu Selanne (26 goals, 40 assists, 66 points)

Top returning goalie: Jonas Hiller (29-30-12, 2.57, .910)

Key additions: G Viktor Fasth; D Sheldon Souray; D Bryan Allen; D Jordan Hendry; RW Brad Staubitz; C Daniel Winnik.

Key subtractions: G Dan Ellis; D Lubomir Visnovsky; LW Niklas Hagman; D Sheldon Brookbank; LW Jason Blake; RW George Parros; C Rod Pelley.

Goaltending: Hiller appeared in a career-high 73 games last season, and seems to be at his best in the biggest games. He’s a strong positional netminder who is quick laterally and seldom seems to be bothered by a bad performance or a weak goal.

Player to watch: G Viktor Fasth. Signed as a free agent in the summer, he was top goalie in the Swedish Elite League the last two seasons, the first goalie to do that since Henrik Lundqvist. He’s on the small side for a modern NHL goalie at six feet, but is positionally sound and well experienced in international hockey.

Icing: Ducks need to get the names of RW Corey Perry and C Ryan Getzlaf on new contracts. Core players of Ducks are both slated to become unrestricted free agents at season’s end . . . Looking to win the fans back after the lockout, Boudreau fielded questions form them in an open format held prior to training camp . . . Selanne joined Stan Mikita and Jaromir Jagr as only European-born NHLers with 1,400 career points.

Highlights: Senators win double overtime thriller
The Pittsburgh Penguins were under a half-minute away from taking a 3-0 lead in their Eastern Conference semifinal series against the Ottawa Senators, but Daniel Alfredsson ended that thought by beating Tomas Vokoun to send the game into overtime. One overtime wasn’t enough for these two teams, so a second one had to be played in order to find a winner. Ottawa's Colin Greening scored midway through the second OT.
