Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Grant Balfour (knee) is recovering ahead of schedule.
Melvin said his biggest problem with Balfour at this point is keeping him from doing too much. The reliever will have at least one more flat-ground session later in the week before then potentially moving to the mound. Balfour, of course, had arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on February 14 and was given a 4-6 week timetable to return. It sounds like he should be able to make it back for Opening Day as long as he doesn't experience a setback.
