According to Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune, Jeff Samardzija turned down a five-year extension from the Cubs this winter.
Samardzija said "it doesn't really make much sense" to talk about an extension after his first season in the rotation, as he has a chance to make even more money in the long-term if he continues to establish himself. The 28-year-old is under contract for $2.64 million this season and remains under team control through 2015.
