Carpenter 'very unlikely' to pitch this year
Chris Carpenter - S - St Louis Cardinals
Feb. 5, 2013 - 4:05 PM ET

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said Tuesday that Chris Carpenter is still feeling discomfort in his arm and is "very unlikely" to pitch in 2013.

The determination was made after Carpenter recently felt the same symptoms that he dealt with prior to undergoing thoracic outlet syndrome surgery last year. The 37-year-old will seek medical attention, so he isn't quite ready to announce his retirement, but it's very possible that he has thrown his last pitch in the big leagues. Mozeliak said that Carpenter will likely be placed on the disabled list, so Carpenter will still get his $12.5 million salary in 2013. Shelby Miller is likely the favorite to fill his spot in the rotation and gets a healthy boost in potential fantasy value, though Joe Kelly and Trevor Rosenthal could also be considered. It's worth noting that Kyle Lohse remains a free agent.
