Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald reports that the Red Sox are "closing in" on a two-year deal with Jonny Gomes.
This confirms a report by Sean McAdam of CSNNE.com. The Red Sox are also talking to Cody Ross, but Gomes is likely to sign for significantly less. The 31-year-old batted .262/.377/.491 with 18 home runs and an .868 OPS in 333 plate appearances with the A's this season. Gomes is a pretty terrible fielder and has enjoyed most of his success against southpaws, but he should provide value if used appropriately.
