Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo indicated Thursday that he is hopeful of reaching a contract extension with Ryan Zimmerman before the third baseman's Saturday deadline.
"We're working extremely hard at it, and both teams want something and are working at it," said Rizzo. "So yeah, I'm hopeful." Zimmerman's agent, Brodie Van Wagenen, arrived in Viera, Florida on Wednesday and intends to meet with Rizzo over the next couple of days. Zimmerman has said that he won't negotiate once camp officially opens for position players Saturday, which would push any future discussions until the offseason. The 27-year-old is signed through the 2013 season.
