The Hawks expected to deal Josh Smith to the Bucks at the trade deadline but declined due to salary cap concerns, sources close to the process told ESPN's Marc Stein.
Stein reports the Hawks wanted to land Monta Ellis in the deal but preferred to keep Smith when Milwaukee would only offer a package centered around Beno Udrih and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute. Hawks GM Danny Ferry has spent much of his brief time with Atlanta working the team's salary cap into a much more workable state ahead of this summer, when Smith and Atlanta native Dwight Howard will be unrestricted free agents. Howard recently acknowledged the two friends have spoken about playing together in the NBA, but we're skeptical Ferry would devote that much of his cap space to a frontcourt of Smith, Howard and Al Horford.
