The New York Rangers issued an optimistic statement regarding the status of injured defenseman Marc Staal Wednesday, but he is out indefinitely after being hit near his right eye by a puck.
"Following an injury suffered in [Tuesday] night's game vs. Philadelphia, Marc Staal was examined today in New York by Dr. Mark Fromer, ophthalmologist, and Dr. Mendel Markowitz, maxillofacial surgeon," read the statement. "The injury has improved significantly and both doctors are optimistic that Marc will make a full recovery. Staal will be sidelined indefinitely." Eric Staal told NHL.com that Marc appeared to be "OK spirits," but the extent of the damage won't be known until the swelling goes down.
