NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr both told the media that some progress is being made during the latest round of labor talks.

"There's been some progress, but we're still apart on a number of issues," said Bettman. "As long as the process continues I am hopeful." The union still has the option to poll players on whether they'd support a "disclaimer of interest" after the deadline to file was allowed to pass late Wednesday night. The pension funds and the salary cap for 2013-14 are a couple of pressing issues that remain to be worked out, according to sources.
