Rumors out of Ottawa suggest that Sergei Gonchar may be dealt before the February 28th NHL trading deadline.
This should come as no surprise as Gonchar has been one of the league's biggest disappointments this season. The veteran rearguard has registered only 21 points in 50 games and has a horrendous minus 17 plus/minus rating. Certainly this is not what the Sens were hoping for when they signed him to a three-year $16.5 million deal this past offseason. Despite the Senators' alleged desire to move Gonchar, his contract may be difficult for another team to absorb given Gonchar's age (36) and performance. He also has a no-movement provision in his contract that will require the Sens to seek his permission before a trade. From a fantasy perspective, Gonchar would stand to gain value being used more effectively on a better team. Stay tuned.
