The Blue Jackets and defenseman Nikita Nikitin are trying to hammer out a deal.
The underrated rearguard is slated to become a restricted free agent in 15 days and the Jackets seemingly want to ink him to a long-term contract. However, the team's priority on the moment is dealing with the Rick Nash situation. A deal is therefore unlikely before next weekend's entry draft.
