Twenty-two-year-old Jared Spurgeon has been a great surprise for the Minnesota Wild this season.
The undrafted defenseman has been playing at the NHL level for over a year and most drafted defensemen do not get to the show this quickly, never mind an undrafted player. He was actually drafted by the Islanders but did not sign and was never drafted again. "It's a really good story for our organization," coach Mike Yeo said . "I mean, what a find. It's like just picking up a first-rounder, a high first-rounder, the way he goes out and plays the game. It's hard to say it, but he's a great leader for us. Every night he's so consistent in the way he approaches the game, in the way he goes out and plays." Spurgeon leads the Wild in TOI and has been the only Wild blueliner to play every game. He has two goals and 15 points with eight points coming on the power play. He only has four penalty minutes and is plus-two so he should be on someone's roster in deep pools despite his lack of penalty minutes.
