Contract issues won’t slow Jets RBs in 2009

Even if Jones, Washington unhappy, N.Y. has enough depth to carry offense

Thomas Jones led the AFC in rushing yards last season.

Q: My gut says that Michael Vick ends up in San Francisco under the mentoring of Mike Singletary. What does your gut say?
— Billy Betts, Shelbyville, Ky.

A: Sorry Billy. It won’t happen. San Francisco — whose residents picket and protest at the drop of a helmet — probably would not be the best city for Vick.

Given where the 49ers are in their development as a team, Michael Vick is not what they need.

Q: Is Jason Taylor going to have any kind of impact back in Miami? It’s hard for me to believe the guy can play more than 25 downs a game.
— Jaxon McIntyre, Port St. Lucia, Fla.

A: I’d be willing to take a gamble on Taylor if I were running the Dolphins. Remember, he had 11 sacks just two seasons ago. The issue is whether or not last season was an aberration, or an indicator that the 34-year old is starting to show his age. It might have been an aberration because the Redskins did not play Taylor to his strengths the way the Dolphins did and will. Taylor was not productive, and he got hurt.

If he can stay healthy in Miami, I would bet he will have a double figure sack total.

Q: Why does the NFL Draft always have to be in New York? Why not rotate it through the rest of the NFL cities? That way, we don't have to watch Jets fans making asses out of themselves every year and booing every pick made by another NFL team.
— Steve Foster, Friendswood, Texas

A: There is talk from time to time about moving the draft around and eventually the NFL could tinker with it. But the league knows it has a good home for the draft in the media capital of America.

What if they held the draft in another city and no one came? At least there is no threat of that happening in New York.

Q: How many teams are using astro-turf?? Is there any push by the players union to get all natural turf on all the NFL stadiums??
— Michael Billington, Paradise, Calif.

A: No teams use Astroturf anymore. But 14 of them use Field Turf, or something similar. Players don’t complain much about Field Turf. Most prefer real grass, but Field Turf is not a bad alternative. It’s nothing like the old rock-hard Astroturf fields that tore up joints. So replacing artificial surfaces with real grass is not a priority for the union. In fact, it’s more likely players would want to see some substandard grass fields replaced by Field Turf.
