I understand a bit of historical airbrushing surrounding the custom team publication. NFL Films faces the annual task of creating a film for every team in the NFL, including total disasters.
They make for great viewing, if only to watch the editors squirm to find one bit of good footage in the garbage pile of even the 2008 Detroit Lions' season while the announcer booms something like "The Detroit Lions fought valiantly, and only allowed 351 yards and 2 TDs to Drew Brees in a 42-7 loss."
At least they leave the facts and nasty bits in, though. This year's Notre Dame media guide was outsourced to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, who excised not just the 2007 3-9 Notre Dame season from the record , but also any losing record whatsoever from Weis' record.
This was explained by the following:
"In a lot of cases those decisions are made on the fly, on deadline pressure," Notre Dame senior associate athletics director for media relations John Heisler said. "Whenever we did that in the beginning for Charlie or whatever, I don't know that there was a reason why we were trying to go back and make it look like something else."
Weis' bio is especially egregious in the self-editing going on here, but at least they can cite prior success as a head coach. If Auburn were to do the same for Gene Chizik, his resume would have this gaping hole between 2006-2008, since that covers the span of time the Tigers' new coach spent going 5-19 at Iowa State over three seasons.
As it stands, the bio cites his two year contract extension as the best validation of "Chizik's leadership and vision for the program" ... the same contract extension he skipped out on to take the job at Auburn. Those aren't losses, reader: they're "learning experiences," and judging by the number on Weis and Chizik's record as college head coaches, they've learned a lot in the last three years.
