Q: What will the Panthers do with Steve Smith now? After that fight will they trade him or is he too good to trade?
— Brian, Davidson, N.C.
A: I wouldn't trade Steve Smith if I were running the Panthers. I might enroll him in anger management class. But I wouldn't trade him. He's a special player, one of the best wide receivers in the game. If the worst thing he ever does is punch a teammate, the Panthers should be able to live with that. There are a lot of players in the NFL who have done much worse.
Q: Could Colt Brennan challenge for the Redskins starting job?
— Vicki C, Alexandria, Va.
A: Every August the third string quarterback on a number of NFL teams becomes a fan favorite because of his performance in preseason games. But preseason games are not good barometers of a quarterback's ability. Colt Brennan looked good against the Colts. That doesn't mean he is a threat to beat out Jason Campbell or that he ever will be. Campbell, at least this year, is much better prepared to run the Redskins offense than Brennan could possibly be.
Q: Is Ronnie Brown going to be a step slower after his injury last season? He looked like he was just starting to thrive when he wrecked his knee.
— Jaxson Reinholdt, Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.
Q: Hey Dan, what do you think about the exhibition games? Part of me is glad football is here, but man, they’re tough to watch.![]()
— Zack Snyder, Portland, Ore.
A: Preseason games are tough to watch if you watch football expecting to see excellence. But they have a value in that they enable us to see young players competing for the jobs. There is great drama in preseason games, though it is a different kind of drama than the drama in regular season games. That being said, I would like to see the preseason shortened to two games. It's too long for my liking.
