Cung Le stopped Frank Shamrock to capture the Strikeforce middleweight championship during the main event of last night's EliteXC-Strikeforce co-promotion.

In an exciting back-and-forth match fought almost exclusively in the standing position, Le battered Shamrock over the course of three rounds and eventually landed a kick that broke Shamrock's right arm.

After the round ended, Shamrock went back to his corner and realized he could not continue, bringing a halt to the scheduled five-round fight, and giving Le the Strikeforce middleweight title.

Going into the fight, Shamrock said he would engage Le, a renowned kickboxer, in the standup game, and he followed through on his promise.

Shamrock wasn't without his moments either. In a wild third round that electrified the fans, Shamrock connected with several punches including a sharp right that staggered Le before the challenger fired back and finished before the closing bell with the kick that ultimately ended the fight.

Shamrock left the cage with his arm in a sling.

With the win, the 34-year-old Le, a relative neophyte to the MMA game, moves to 6-0 overall. Shamrock drops to 24-9-1.

The event drew a crowd of 16,326 to the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.
