Q: Golf had a hard enough time getting attention in March when it had The Players Championship. Now with that tournament moving to May, what’s there to look forward to during the month?
— Kevin Redden, from Pierre S.D.
A: It’s hard to say what the first two weeks will offer, but the last two stops on the Florida swing should be entertaining for the simple fact Tiger Woods will be positioned upon golf courses that suit him perfectly: Bay Hill and Doral. He’s won four times at Arnold Palmer’s gathering, while he’s won each of the last two at Doral, so to spark your interest, Kevin, perhaps we have the foundation being poured for another streak. No question, The Players Championship was a March showcase, but it will be so in May, too, and there’s no reason to fret the wide gap between the Florida swing and the Sawgrass festivities — after all, there’s a get-together at Augusta National (April 5-8) that provides great theater.
Q: Think Henrik Stenson has peaked, at least as far as the world rankings go? It’s hard for me to see him go higher than No. 5. Or do you think a major title is in his future?
— Martin from Las Cruces, N.M.
A: Martin, that bandwagon you see riding by is loaded with people who subscribe to the “what have you done for me lately?” philosophy, because Stenson has indeed been on a magnificent run. In his last eight tournaments, dating back to September, the 30-year-old Swede has won three times and been top 10 on six occasions and with his WGC Match Play win over Geoff Ogilvy, he has pushed to No. 5 in the world order. Based on current form, he belongs there, but I’m letting that bandwagon ride by without hopping on. Winning in wide-open desert locales (Dubai, Tucson) is nice, but majors aren’t played in similar environments, so the jury’s still out. Let’s wait and see if Stenson has more than the power game that has served him well. I suspect he’ll hang around the Top 10 for a while, but I’d be surprised if he pushes any higher than fifth.
